We’re nearing Give to the Max Day, the annual charitable giving event put on by Give MN on Thursday, November 17, 2016.

For this year’s event you can help us reach out to 200 of our neighbors by supporting #HelloNorthside, a series of neighborly gestures of thanks. Your help sponsors the assembly and delivery of 200 Art Boxes handmade by youth in our Public Art lab. The screen printed packages include items such as bath salts, handmade tea bags, inspiring quotes, bubbles, custom jewelry and other apparel.

You also help support the JXTA Tactical Urbanism team in their delivery of the care packages and face-to-face engagements with neighbors within a 3-square block radius of the Emerson and Broadway intersection.

Here’s how you can help us reach our $5,000 goal:

  1. Setup a reminder. Jot a note down on your calendar, or in your phone to give on November 17. Ready to give right now? We love it – you can start giving today on the Juxtaposition Arts’ GiveMN page.
  2.  Give.Your contribution to Juxtaposition Arts is a direct investment in our neighbors and youth artists; a gift in any amount makes a very great impact.
  3. Spread the word. We’re using #HelloNorthsidempls to share our message and campaign and we encourage you to use it, too!

Thank you for supporting youth on their journey to become makers, leaders and doers in North Minneapolis!

You are invited to come speak your truth!

On Monday, September 26th, 11-5pm, at our pocket park next to 2007 Emerson Avenue N., JXTA will host “The Truth Booth,” a project by artists Ryan Alexiev, Jim Ricks, Will Sylvester and Hank Willis Thomas, members of The Cause Collective.

The Collective invites people to sit inside The Truth Booth (a giant, inflatable sculpture in the shape of a cartoon speech bubble with the word “Truth” printed on the side) and complete the sentence, “The truth is…” while being videotaped. Along their 24-city tour The Collective aims to empower hundreds of Americans to speak freely without fear of judgment or persecution.

The booth will be at JXTA for one day only. Come be heard!

The Minnesota Truth Booth stop is sponsored by the Walker Art Center in partnership with Juxtaposition Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

JXTA is hosting a workshop on art, history and archives featuring Black feminist poet, playwright, essayist, novelist and children’s author, Zetta Elliot!

Here’s more about Zetta:

Born in Canada, Zetta Elliott moved to the US in 1994 to pursue her PhD in American Studies at NYU. Her poetry has been published in several anthologies, and her plays have been staged in New York, Chicago, and Cleveland. Her essays have appeared inThe Huffington Post, School Library Journal, and Publishers Weekly. She is the author of over twenty books for young readers, including the award-winning picture book Bird. Her urban fantasy novel, Ship of Souls, was named a Booklist Top Ten Sci-fi/Fantasy Title for Youth. Three books published under her own imprint, Rosetta Press, have been named Best Children’s Books of the Year by the Bank Street Center for Children’s Literature. Rosetta Press generates culturally relevant stories that center children who have been marginalized, misrepresented, and/or rendered invisible in traditional children’s literature. Environmental Design will have the new pedal-powered bike carousel open in our Emerson Avenue pocket park and will also be displaying their models of a redeveloped Upper Harbor Terminal  and designs to connect bike traffic from Theodore Wirth Parkway along 26th Ave to the Mississippi River. Attendees will be invited to take park in  sign-up for an engagement bike ride in conjunction with a project for Minneapolis Parks Foundation.

Youth who work in the Environmental Design Studio are creating a large installation in our next door pocket park using translucent acrylic flowers and panels that illuminate.  The piece will encourage viewers to ‘look up to ancestors!’ The park will also be the site of the unveiling of a new pop-up bike carousel.  TIME:  12-7pm

Artists from Wild Seed , JXTA neighbors, and youth and adults from our Tactical Urbanism team will parade through the streets with art and hand made puppets to celebrate African American labor and in honor of recently passed ancestors including Prince and Muhammad Ali.  TIME:  2pm

Exhibits and Tours

The Contemporary and Public Art Studio team will officially open the Emory Douglas-inspired mural which was designed in collaboration with Houston-based artist Jamal Cyrus  in honor of black motherhood, self-determination and everyday black excellence. There will be a related exhibit in our Emerson Avenue gallery which explores rituals of everyday life as strategies for healing. You can purchase apprentice designed “healing kits” which include items such as candles, jewelry and poetry.  Memorialize the day by taking a pic in our photo booth.

At 1108 W. Broadway, the Visual Arts Literacy Training program will exhibit work, provide an opportunity for the public to take part in still life drawing and give visitors a tour of the lab. FLOW attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the graphic design studios.  The 1108 Artists’ studios will be open as well.

Our summer Free Wall: Introduction to Painting program will guide attendees through “Tag Demos” at the northern wall of 1808 Emerson Avenue North. Let your name be known!
