Last year, Juxtaposition Arts (JXTA) created a small fleet of Mobile Engagement Units and brought it to Northern Spark. These artist-designed and built bikes sport a variety of features to create bright and welcoming places in public space: light, sound, bubbles, portable seating, and table-top surfaces for art-making and games (dominos, chess, cards, etc.).

This year, we will build on this work and return to the Northern Spark festival with an expanded fleet. We’re bringing back the bikes and bike trailers, pedaled by JXTA Tactical Urbanism youth apprentices and staff, that invite you to play a game, strike up a conversation, dance, make art and much more.

Our Locations and Times:

9 pm-11 pm:  Convention Center Plaza
11-midnight: Peavey Plaza
midnight-2 am: Guthrie Plaza

Northern Spark is an all-night arts festival that lights up Minneapolis on June 13, 2015. Follow the festival (and share your experience) using the hashtag #nspk and #MobileJXTA

Official description from the City of Minneapolis:
The nonconference theme – Creative Engagement and Action using arts and placemaking – is an in-depth look at creative engagement strategies and creative placemaking. Participants will be immersed into a experiential atmosphere where they will gain the skills and strategies to take creative placemaking techniques back to their own community and do it from start to finish.
The nonConference aims at enabling participants to:

  • Gain practical skills and tools to improve engagement and planning efforts;
  • Explore common challenges that most small organizations face;
  • Share ideas and approaches used to address challenges and bring solutions; and
  • Meet others, build new relationships and “broaden the table” around common goals and interests
Our exhibit will feature products and services from the JXTALabs, including Environmental Design, Tactical Urbanism, Textiles and Screenprinting, Graphic Design and Public Art. We will bring both examples of past work and opportunities for people to experience elements of our engagement strategies and art and design practices.
