Tactical Urbanism

JXTA’s Tactical Lab uses art, design and other practices that amplify neighborhood voice, build community knowledge, and interrupt patterns of disinvestment in our city. By combining art and design with urban planning, research, community building and engagement, we create needed interventions in public space and talk with people about issues affecting them in that space.

Since 2013, Tactical has worked on a variety of projects, some initiated by JXTA, and some with partners and clients in North Minneapolis and around the city. Tactical collaborates with local and national planners, designers, community organizers, artists and engineers as well.

Some of our recent projects and publications include:

  • Dolla Dolla Bill Y’All: Black Business and Economic Development on West Broadway, a youth-participatory action research project led by JXTA
  • Better Bus Stops, an effort led by Metro Transit to create equity in the distribution of bus stop shelters and other amenities, and inform the policy for future bus stop amenity allocation
  • A Permanent Space for the West Broadway Farmers Market, an engagement and planning effort with the West Broadway Coalition and coalition members of Northside Fresh
  • Street Performance in Downtown Minneapolis, a research project for the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District
  • Taking Back the Classroom, a youth participatory action research project on student centered learning in North Minneapolis schools, in collaboration with Youthprise for the Phillips Family Foundation. Download here.
