About JXTA's Groundbreaking

Construction of the new building and renovation of campus buildings (including four newly acquired lots on Emerson and Broadway) will begin in early September and is slated to be complete by Fall 2022. The new state-of-the-art headquarters plants the seeds for new and expanded programming and will serve as a hub for creative training, economic justice, and youth development in North Minneapolis.

In May 2018 JXTA launched the biggest campaign in its history: a capital and legacy campaign to build a new headquarters, update its campus, and invest in the future of its work. Through grants, government funds, individual donations, and corporate gifts JXTA has raised over $11.5 million of the total $12.9M it will cost to build the new campus. A remaining $5 million must be raised toward construction, and to fund new programming, staff wages, operational costs, and maintenance of the new building.

Red Wing Boots Collaboration

We’ve partnered with Red Wing Boots to create custom boots designed by local and national artists. Like many of our projects, this collaboration came about through a JXTA alum connection: Aaron Henderson, the Creative Director at Red Wing, was an apprentice at JXTA in 2000. He went on to work as a designer for Nike in Portland, Oregon, and eventually landed at Red Wing in Minnesota.

For this project, Red Wing donated 20 pairs of custom JXTA-branded boots for artists—from within JXTA or connected to us in some way—to decorate in their own unique style and medium. This collaboration is a testament to JXTA’s position as a launching pad for creative pursuits and we’re grateful to continue nurturing relationships to support this work!

About Roger Cummings

This is your exclusive chance to purchase work from JXTA's Co-Founder.

Roger Cummings is a Minneapolis/Saint Paul based artist who is known for spatial interventions that revitalize communities, create space for people, and use culture as an art form.  His biggest artistic intervention is through this nontraditional and heuristic work of founding and providing creative leadership at JXTA, a community art/design center and youth culture archival preservation space in North Minneapolis.

All the works from this series come from spatial memory — time, sound, building types and neighborhood structures. This series comes with a playlist, readings and pictures that were listened to and read that informed the colors, affirmations, layers, feeling and erasures. These works are meant to be engaged with through affirmations. Each time you observe them you should see something different: a word, phrase, pattern, emotion. Most of the material was found and reused.
